Take a botanical walk with Robin Kobaly as trip leader through the canyons and foothills of the Little San Bernardino Mountains within Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and the Sand to Snow National Monument. We will hike several miles to explore the plant communities within Big Morongo Canyon, home to desert riparian and marsh species as well as upland Colorado and Mojave transition zone desert vegetation. Included will be a short stop in adjacent Dry Morongo Canyon to check for rare plants known to emerge there in good years, before visiting the riparian and marsh habitat in Big Morongo Canyon Preserve. We will look for historic occurrences of the endangered triple-ribbed milkvetch (Astragalus tricarinatus) that have been detected in the vicinity. We will check out other plants unique to these habitats such as Linanthus maculatus (Little San Bernardino Mountains Linanthus), Peucephyllum schottii (Pygmycedar), Crossosoma bigelovii (Ragged Rockflower) and Eriogonum elongatum (Longstem Buckwheat). Winter rains should make botanizing especially fun and rewarding this spring.
Requirements: Participants must be able to hike 3-5 miles, sometimes over uneven terrain and be prepared for desert hiking conditions.
