Guide to Morongo Valley Wildflowers

Guide to Morongo Valley Wildflowers

Guide to Morongo Valley Wildflowers

By Babs Kobaly

This historic guide to the native desert plants of the High-Desert region of the Morongo Basin has been reprinted in cooperation with The Power of Plants from the original 1964 manuscript by botanist Babs Kobaly. This 55-page booklet describes plants that occur in the floristically rich Morongo Valley, as well as throughout the Mojave Desert, organized by characteristics that are recognizable by even the beginning plant enthusiast. This fun guide describes plants by characters such as their unusual smell, odd stems or fruits, distinctive leaves or juices, or even their unique skeletons, making identification more accessible to everyone without counting flower petals, stamens, or measuring leaf lengths.

Babs Kobaly

This guide, written and first published over forty-five years ago by my mom, Babs Kobaly, was her unique way of introducing others to the beauty of desert plants in a way that would not intimidate beginners.

Since I was six years old, I have been fortunate to have studied plants with her. Together we discovered, identified, tasted, tested, and researched every desert plant we could find throughout the Morongo Basin. My love of plants was influenced by all the botanical forays we took, inspiring me to receive my masters degree in botany.

For decades, every morning, she would hike different hills, canyons, mountains, and washes of the high desert, researching the native plants and their uses, and has taught hundreds of unique classes on desert native plants. Her work garnered her the honor of having a rare desert hybrid sage named after her by a professor of botany at the University of California, Riverside.
